The shining

"The asterisk is placed against [that which has been] omitted, in order for what seems to be omitted may shine forth." —St. Isidore of Seville, Etymolgiae

(as quoted in Torbjörn Lundmark's Quirky Qwerty)

Trivia: What is the triple asterisk section-break indicator above (* * *) known as?

I believe an asterism is for the pyramid formation:

What about as a section divider?

i learned the horizontal section divider asterisk-trio as a "section break" ("with asterisks"). but that seemed too easy! you're right, though; asterism isn't it...

hm...until a properly correct and ancient typographical term is unearthed, in my personal copyediting slang the * * * section breaker will be known as "the flattened asterism".
