The thing I love about this interview. When you talk to an agent or editor (OK, not EP, I'm sure, rest-of-world), they always say the same thing: Well, obviously you want it to be accessible to as many people as possible. Or they will comment that one needs to do something or other for 'the reader'. 'The'? Readers find all kinds of strange ways to read texts. McCarthy might, I suppose, have written a book for which Oprah's questions would not have looked so bizarre, but the fact is she has managed to make the books what she wants them to be. She has not required any assistance from the author to do so.
